Item Optimizing Product Integrity: Implementing a Strategic Approach to Quality Control in Frozen Food Manufacturing(Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico, 2024) Garcés Ortega, Jesús G.This research investigates the optimization of a manual artisanal production line for turnovers, focusing on key quality parameters such as dough weight, filling weight, sealing efficiency, and braiding consistency. Sampling across four shifts revealed variability in product dimensions and sealing performance, with statistical analyses, including ANOVA, identifying significant differences among shifts. Shift-specific challenges, such as lower sealing efficiency and worker fatigue, were addressed through targeted interventions like training, task rotation, and quality monitoring. Residual plots, means plots, and boxplots visualized data trends, highlighting critical areas for improvement. Implementing these measures resulted in a 20% reduction in defects and enhanced compliance with local and international food safety regulations. The study demonstrates the effectiveness of systematic quality control in manual production, offering a scalable framework for artisanal frozen food processes. Future research will explore advanced technologies, sustainability practices, and scaling solutions to further enhance production efficiency and market competitiveness. These substances or solutions are designed to kill or inactivate microorganisms on surfaces or in the environment. They are used in various settings such as homes, hospitals, schools, public spaces, and industries to maintain a safe and healthy environment. STERIS communicated in 2022 that LpH and Vesphene phenolic disinfectants will be discontinued in July 2023. Many sites across the Merck network are impacted; this is a Global situation: LpH and Vesphene are the LPO-qualified disinfectant agents for walls and ceilings; A new disinfectant must be qualified for sanitizing at LPO. An analysis of the current state identified the root causes of the “Overflow” defect and established a foundation for process improvements. The implemented redesign allowed the transition from batch production to a single-piece flow system. Specifically for the thermal bonding process, applying Lean methodology allowed for the re-sequencing of process steps, which facilitated an optimal workload balance. Post-implementation results demonstrated a significant reduction in defect rates, from 1.91% to 0.24%, reflecting a statistical difference with a p-value of 1.59E-12. Additionally, scrap costs decreased substantially in the three months following Lean implementation, resulting in financial savings of $292K. However, despite time constraints, this study highlights the tangible benefits of process optimization through the Lean application methodologies by providing a clear example of its impact on improving operational efficiency. These challenges result in frequent turnbacks, inconsistent workflows, and delays, negatively impacting productivity and project timelines. To resolve these issues, the study develops a comprehensive process map that standardizes workflows by defining key stages, responsibilities, and dependencies, enhancing clarity and reducing errors. Additionally, tailored training programs equip team members with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate the updated processes, fostering engagement and operational alignment. The study employs performance metrics such as turnback rates, resolution times, and delivery timelines to monitor improvements. Initial results indicate significant reductions in turnbacks and enhanced delivery efficiency, validating the effectiveness of the interventions. Beyond addressing immediate challenges, this research establishes a scalable framework for long-term success, transforming engineering operations into a more efficient and collaborative environment. By integrating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and participatory noise mapping, the research identifies critical noise hotspots and evaluates the relationship between noise levels and land-use zoning. Utilizing the NIOSH Sound Level Meter App, 81 noise samples were collected to measure equivalent continuous sound levels (LAeq) and maximum sound levels (Lmax). Key findings reveal significant noise contributions from transportation corridors, air traffic, and mixed-use zones, with residential areas exhibiting the highest sensitivity. Kernel density analysis highlights clusters of noise pollution exceeding regulatory thresholds established by Puerto Rico’s Environmental Quality Board, emphasizing the role of zoning and infrastructure in shaping noise dynamics. The study underscores the feasibility of smartphone-based participatory noise mapping as a cost-effective approach to environmental monitoring. The system includes a ravine water source, a 600-gallon storage tank, and an energy efficient piping and pump design. Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in COMSOL Multiphysics, key parameters such as pressure distribution, velocity profiles, volumetric flow rate, and Reynolds number were evaluated. Results indicate maximum pressure at the inlet due to the pump and minimum pressure at the outlet from elevation changes and pipe bends. A steady velocity profile and consistent volumetric flow rate confirm system stability. The Reynolds number (1.55×10⁵) indicates turbulent flow, ensuring efficient energy dissipation. The system meets performance criteria, providing efficient water transport with minimal energy consumption. Future improvements include integrating a submersible pump and further optimization to enhance system efficiency for sustainable off-grid applications. Key Terms ⎯ Computational Fluid Dynamics, Off-grid water system, Pressure distribution, Turbulent flow.Item Pocket Hollywood: Transforming Film Pre-Production with AI Framework(Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico, 2024) Ortiz Rivera, David J.; Torres Batista, NelliudPocket Hollywood is an AI assistant designed to streamline the film pre-production process, addressing challenges in scriptwriting, storyboarding, budgeting, and logistics.
