Abstract

The Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule is requiring additional removal or inactivation of Cryptosporidium Oocyst for public drinking water system. The Cubuy Water Treatment Plant needs to provide an additional one log removal/inactivation of Cryptosporidium. This project has the main objective of determining the most efficient alternative to achieve the Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule requirements. Three alternatives were considered using different approaches for removal or inactivation of the microorganisms. Existing facilities were evaluated to determine performance limiting factors. Field test were performed to identify possible operational or infrastructure deficiency problems. The best alternative was selected based on: Net Present Value, Reliability, Complexity, and Environmental Impacts. The recommended alternative includes filter plant optimization and disinfection using ultraviolet reactors. This alternative is capable of comply with the new regulatory requirements and corrects other Plant compliance problems. Key Terms - Cryptosporidium, Filter Assessment, Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule, Water Treatment Plant.
